24th Annual National Black Graduate Student Conference

Overview

The 2011-2012 NBGSA Conference Committee is seeking proposals for papers, posters, panels, and workshops that focus on our conference theme: “Claiming Our Place in Uncommon Spaces.” While proposals related to this theme are especially welcome, proposals addressing any topic of interest to the diverse membership of the National Black Graduate Student Association will be considered. There are two monetary prizes of $300 each for Best Oral presentation and Best Poster presentation.

Submission Guidelines

Conference attendees are invited to participate in scholarship and exchange through exhibition and/ or competition. Participants must be NBGSA members at the time of the conference.

Oral Presentation

Oral presentations are brief discussions of a focused research topic. Presentations are 12 minutes in length with five additional minutes allotted to each presenter for questions. While there is a paper competition, students who are interested in presenting research are not required to enter the competition.

Poster Presentation

Posters are ideal for presenting speculative in-progress work, late-breaking results from completed work, or for giving an introduction to interesting, innovative theoretical work. Posters are intended to provide authors and participants with the ability to connect with each other and to engage in discussions about the work. Poster sizes are not specified; however, they should be at least 17” by 22”. Presenters will be expected to bring 25 copies of their abstract for the session. Titles of abstracts for the Poster Session will appear in the conference program. Students who are interested in presenting research are welcome to, but not required to compete.

Workshops and Panels

Workshops and panels are not forums for research presentation; rather, they should focus on a single topic or theme related to the graduate experience and/or conference theme. These hour-long workshops should focus on fostering discussion and must not be presentation only; the major portion of the time should be devoted to discussion. Panels should not have more than five presenters. Sessions can be geared toward undergraduates looking forward to graduate school, or issues related to current graduate students.

Paper Competitions

We are soliciting written papers explaining the issues, methodologies, and outcomes of research involving a single topic. A scholarly paper may be a research report, case study, methodological paper, theoretical paper, or scientific display. The documents are not to exceed 20 pages total, double spaced and should follow the guidelines of the associated discipline (MLA, APA, etc.). No more than 2 tables and/or figures may be included. Additionally, papers should include a short abstract (150-200 words). Papers will be refereed by professors and graduate students who have volunteered for and been elected to academic representative positions within NBGSA. Participants must be in attendance at the conference but are not required to give an oral or poster presentation during the conference.

In addition, winners and a selection of the best papers will be eligible for publication in Call and Response: The Scholarly Journal of the NBGSA. (Note: It is possible that a paper may be accepted for presentation but will not appear in the journal).

Oral Competitions

Students presenting orally are also eligible to compete in the oral competition. Presentations will be evaluated and the best-rated presentations will be awarded. As a reminder, participants in this competition are required to give an oral presentation during the conference.

Poster Competitions

Students presenting a poster presentation are also eligible to compete in the poster competition. Awards will be given to the best rated poster. As a reminder, participants in this competition are required to give a poster presentation during the conference.
