Dear members of NBGSA:
We are a collective body of undergraduates, graduate students, faculty members and stakeholders focused on one thing- the proliferation and advancement of Blacks pursuing graduate degrees. We are together during an exciting time where anything is possible.
Well this is how I feel anyway.
Therefore, I'd like to ask you to take a moment to enjoy it. Enjoy the endless possibilities in the air, enjoy the excitement of new students and faculty, and finally, enjoy the realization that you are one step closer to achieving your bachelors, masters, certificate, or doctoral degrees.
I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as your National President for this upcoming 2011-2012 school year. As a recent MPA graduate, I am uniquely aware of the current and future challenges facing graduate students across the country. I promise to work hard to ensure that we create a better overall quality of life for the graduate student. Goals for this year include better financial aid and academic services, enhanced membership benefits, more communication and networking amongst schools and programs in various regions, an enhanced national profile, and the successful implementation of the National Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I am not alone in these goals. The entire 2011 – 2012 Executive Board is working to enhance this organization for you. All we ask is that you do your part. As you receive announcements for regional conferences, forward them and participate. Take a leap and present your research. Attend a session you may not usually attend. Plan a networking session, or two.
During the next year, I look forward to meeting each of you. You all have a unique strength to contribute to Black graduate study, and I know I will learn a lot from you throughout the year!
Best Wishes for the 2011-2012 Academic Year!
Lauren E Williams, MPA
