Southeast Regional Conference, November 4-5, 2011, Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA
Moving From Words to Action
The National Black Graduate Student Association Southeast Regional Conference will be held 4-5 November 2011, at Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA. The conference will include workshops, speakers, a poster session and a graduate recruiting fair. The theme, “Moving From Words to Action,” is indicative of our desire to stop talking in vain about the changes that we want to see, and begin to take the necessary steps to achieve our stated goals. The areas in which we must move are academic, professional, campus and community. We intend to leave this conference armed with the tools to operate, the plan to triumph and the perseverance to survive the struggle.
There are 5 categories in which papers and presentations are being accepted:
Poster Session – Open to all disciplines
Academic and Professional Leadership – Workshops focusing on improving our standing in the classroom as well as in the working world
Campus Leadership – Presentations focusing on becoming the leading voices on our campuses
Social Leadership – Investigating avenues we must take in order to take care of our communities and neighborhoods
Open Forum – The open forum will be an inclusive discussion on a topic that is of current importance to black graduate students
Additionally, volunteers are needed as timers, recorders moderators and registration attendants.
Please submit your abstract to the Southeast Regional Representatives (Jeffery Fleming and Calvin Elkins) by Friday, 28 October 2011. Please include name, institution, degree seeking (major and level), name of campus BGSA and position (if applicable) and contact info. Also indicate what types of setup/equipment you will require. If interested in volunteering, please indicate this in the e-mail.
Registration for the conference is $35. Currently, this is payable at the door. However, online registration will be open later this month. Those who e-mail their submissions will be notified when online registration is live. Preliminary programs and other details will be posted on the NBGSA website and the Southeast Region Facebook page as well. General information on hotel accommodations will soon be available on the Facebook page.
In the event that you are unable to make the conference, you may still send a poster or a powerpoint presentation. Please submit an abstract as indicated above and specify that you will be an absentee presenter. We will then contact you with further instruction. We are implementing this program to ensure that every student who wishes to participate in the conference has an opportunity.
